Scuba
Diving
in Thailand
Learn
to dive! You've always wanted to! Now you can!
Planet Scuba has over 20 years of experience scuba
diving in Thailand. We are one of Thailand's leading
Dive Centre’s and the first Scuba Diving Centre
in Thailand to be awarded the prestigious PADI
Career Development Centre Rating (CDC). There
are only 6 out of the 200+ dive centre’s in Thailand
with the CDC rating. The reputation of our centre
is highly regarded by PADI (the Professional Association
of Diving Instructors). We have been the proud
recipient of many awards from PADI over the years,
including the PADI award for "Excellence
in Dive Resort Operation" and the "Outstanding
Commitment to PADI” award.
|
|
We
operate a chain of Full Service Dive Centres on Koh
Samui, Koh Tao and in Bangkok, offering the full range
of PADI Scuba Diving courses from complete beginner
up to Dive Instructor. Learning scuba diving with Planet
Scuba is a fun experience, and absolutely safe. Our
classes are small, with seldom more than 3 or 4 students
per instructor. Our PADI Diving Instructors are true
professionals; they love scuba diving and are very patient.
They like nothing better than to introduce a newcomer
to Thailand's underwater world.
Our
boats run daily Scuba Diving Tours from Koh Samui, Koh
Tao and Pattaya to all of the popular dive destinations.
From the depths of Sail Rock, frequented by the illusive
Whale Shark, to the Angthong National Marine Park and
Koh Tao. All with sloping coral reefs and an abundance
of exotic and colourful marine life. If it’s Wreck diving
that inspires you then dive several of Thailand’s best
wrecks from our boat in Pattaya.
Whatever
your scuba diving needs our team will ensure you’ll
have the experience of a lifetime…
Koh
Samui
Koh Samui is located
in the Gulf of Thailand bordering the South China Sea
in the Pacific Ocean and can be found on 500 years old
maps from Chinese Ming dynasty.
The
first inhabitants on Koh Samui were fishermen about
1500 years ago, with fishing and coconut plantations
being the main source of income until the development
of tourism in the 20th Century.
Koh
Samui originated as a back-packers destination in the
late 1970's, but today is a cosmopolitan melting pot,
attracting travelers from all over the world. Accommodation
ranges from bungalows and villas for individuals or
families staying for a month or two, to the mega rich,
dropping in for a weekend at a luxury 5star boutique
resort or private villa on the beach.
Samui
is ideal for families with more facilities than some
of the smaller islands around Thailand.
Most
beaches around Samui have white sand and are fringed
with coconut palms with many resorts and hotels located
just a couple of meters from the beach.
Chaweng
is by far the most popular beach with 7 km of pure white
sand located in the North-East of Samui. Accommodation
ranges from a simple bungalow to a five star hotel room.
Lamai
is quieter and more charming than Chaweng where the
Southern part of the beach is more inviting than the
North, because the sand is softer. Lamai is located
in South-East of Samui, about 10 kilometers South of
Chaweng.
In
the North of Samui you will find the fine beaches of
Maenam, Big Buddha and Bophut. You will also find the
small but very beautiful Chong Mon beach in the North-East
and Bang Por beach in the North-West.
When
to go?
Dry
Season
December - February: The dry season, with beautiful
blue skies and warm sunshine. Not much rain, but plenty
of refreshing breezes at this time.
Hot
Season
March - October: The weather is mainly dry during this
time, with some rain during May and June. It is usually
very sunny and hot. This is a great period to visit
the island if you like the heat. Temperatures range
from 28-35 degrees Celsius at daytime.
Rain
Season
November: Also known as the monsoon season. It's still
hot and normally there are many sunny days in the monsoon
period. On some days you might find yourself in a refreshing
monsoon shower for a moment. The rain showers are often
short and as these island's water supplies are finite,
the rain is needed and important.

Sites Overview

Brief
Information On The Areas
Koh Tao Briefly
This
small island boasts around 20 excellent dive sites.
World class diving can be found at Chumpon & Southwest
Pinnacles. Other Popular sites include Shark Island
with its diverse range of coral and marine life, White
Rock with its Triggerfish and Turtles and the exciting
swim thrus of Green Rock.
For
Beginners or Experienced Divers, Koh Tao is the ideal
choice.
Shark
Island
Located just of the South coast of Koh Tao this twin
rock outcrop consists of a steeply slopping reef going
from 4 meters down to 20 meters. One of the biggest
attractions of this dive is the variety of corals and
fish life to be found. On the East side of the rock
you will find a slopping reef covered in brain corals,
vivid pink anemones and large barrel sponges, among
the corals you will see snappers, banded angel fish
and blue spotted stingrays. Whale Sharks are frequently
sighted in season along with the odd Turtle and there
is also the chance of seeing a few Black tip reef sharks.
This site is also ideal for novice and experienced divers
and offers great snorkelling.
Samran
Pinnacles
This submerged set of three rocky pinnacles is located
just off Sail Rock between Koh Tao & Koh Phangan
and can only be dived at certain times of the year,
generally between May and September. The formation rises
from the ocean floor at 30 meters up to a minimum depth
of 13 meters. The rocks are covered in soft corals,
sponges and a wealth of colourful anemones. Just off
the rocks hanging in the mild to strong currents you
will find large groupers, great barracuda and shoals
of big eye jacks.
South
West Pinnacles
These three rock pinnacles are located about 30 minutes
of the South West Coast of Koh Tao. The impressive rock
formations rise from a depth of 28 meters up to within
10 meters of the surface. Here you will find a vast
array of soft coral bushes, sea whips and barrel sponges
and the walls and ledges are covered in brightly coloured
anemones. The fish life is varied and prolific at this
site, and includes red snapper, honeycomb grouper, banded
angelfish, great barracuda, with leopard sharks frequently
sighted resting on the sandy gorges between the pinnacles.
White
Rock
White Rock is located about halfway between Koh Nang
Yuan and Koh Tao and is a very popular night diving
destination. The site consists of two submerged pinnacles
starting at 20 meters and rising up to within 2 meters
of the surface. The pinnacles gently pan out into many
shelves, which are covered in a healthy selection of
hard and soft coral formations. As the reef slopes away
you will see small blue spotted sting rays and larger
Southern Rays resting on the bottom as well as Pelagics
like, Jacks and Great Barracuda patrolling the depths.
Hin
Wong
Located directly of the off the East coast of Koh Tao
this Granite rock formation ranges in depth from 14
meters to 26 meters and is dotted with soft coral bushes
and Gorgonian fans. Just off the rocks in the mild to
strong currents you will see numerous blue spotted groupers,
banner fish and schooling snappers. It is quite common
to see Hawksbill turtles at this site.
Ao
Leuk
Ao Leuk is an ideal diver-training site located of Koh
Tao's South East Coast. The bay is well sheltered and
has a flat sandy bottom at 12 meters with a fringing
reef running right around the bay. The reef has a good
variety of corals including, Stag Horn, Brain and large
formations of Star corals, amongst the corals you will
find brightly coloured Christmas tree worms. On the
sand you will see yellowfin Goatfish, blennys and bulldozer
shrimps.
Koh
Samui Briefly
80 kilometers out from the mainland of Southern Thailand
lies the beautiful tropical island of Koh Samui. Set
amongst innumerable smaller islands of the Angthong
Archipelago and the Angthong Marine National Park, Koh
Samui is the largest and most populated of the islands
in this region.
National
Marine Park Briefly
Made famous in the recent novel and film 'The Beach',
this beautiful group of islands has some of the most
impressive land scenery in SE Asia. These dive sites
are renowned for their variety of soft corals, fascinating
underwater caves and swim thrus. Here you will be amazed
by the diversity of marine life, the sites are also
ideal for snorkeling and swimming.

Dive
Site Information
Koh
Wao
An average depth in this sheltered bay is only 8 - 14
meters so it's a nice easy dive for the less experienced
divers and a great way to dive yourself in if you have
been out of the water for a while. The site has a fantastic
selection of hard and soft corals with star corals and
table staghorn corals being the most prominent. Here
you will find a vast selection of colourful reef fish
darting in and out of their coral homes, including fusiliers,
yellow tails, banded angelfish and shoaling snappers.
This sites is also an ideal spot for snorkeling and
swimming.
Koh
Wao Lek
A beautiful dive along the edge of the island, through
caverns and swim throughs. Reaching a maximum depth
of 15m, you'll be fascinated by the shoals of Rabbit
fish and fusiliers and the abundance of pink anemone
fish hiding in their homes. Blue spotted rays hide under
the hard corals as you swim by while the wrasse and
damsels play together in the shallows. This site is
ideal for the beginner and more experienced diver with
a relaxed dive in mind.
Hin
Yippon
Located at the Northern most point of the Marine Park
this Dive is not to be missed. Circumnavigating this
small rock you'll find huge boulders forming fascinating
swim thrus and alleyways that make perfect hiding places
for large red snappers and groupers. Around the site
you'll find large barrel sponges, numerous bushy corals
and colourful sea fans, which make perfect shots for
underwater photographers. The maximum depth here is
25 meters with a good average dive depth of 18 meters,
which makes it an ideal site for novice and experienced
divers alike.
Sail
Rock Briefly
Located between Koh Tao & Koh Phangan this dramatic
rock rises out of the water creating the best wall dive
in the Gulf of Thailand, with a maximum depth of 40
meters. The wall is covered in soft sponges along with
many oysters and clams clinging to the craggy surface.
A few Meters away from the wall, schools of batfish
and jacks huddle together in the slight current. Most
divers come here in the hope of seeing whale sharks,
which are frequently sighted in season, whilst the rest
of the year divers swim surrounded by schools of pelagic
fish patrolling the depths. The site is best known for
it's naturally formed rock 'chimney' where you can enter
an opening at 18 mtrs and ascend inside the rock with
your buddy and exit at 10 mtrs.
Chumphon
Pinnacles Briefly
Located North West of Koh Tao, this group of completely
submerged pinnacles is probably one of the best dives
in the Gulf Of Thailand. The giant rock pinnacles rise
up from 35 meters to 14 meters and are covered in a
carpet of pink anemones. The main attraction is the
massive groupers that can be seen on most dives hanging
in the current just off the pinnacles. Here you will
also have an excellent opportunity to see the illusive
Whale Shark, which often cruises by followed by, great
barracuda, jacks, tuna and shoals of Bat fish.
