The
Island
Because it is so remote, Koh Tao was originally a penal
colony for political prisoners. That stopped some 40
years ago (undoubtedly because the government of the
time realised it was a far too pleasant place to send
prisoners!) and the islanders made a comfortable living
harvesting coconuts and fishing. It wasn't until the
mid 1980s that the first travellers discovered Koh Tao.
But word spread fast and today, tourism is a major income
earner on the island. That means you can find quality
accommodation, such as bungalows complete with electricity
and air conditioning (if you want it), a choice of excellent
places to eat and the chance to meet some fascinating
like-minded travellers. What you won't find are coach
loads of travellers or beaches packed with people who
think beaches are only for getting a tan. In fact, you'll
be pleasantly surprised to see how precious few people
there are on the beaches.

Rock
The
diving adventure waits for you across the world. Whether
at a dive resort or an oceanroaming dive vessel, divers
have acces to the earth's pristine, natural wonders.
The Samui Archipelago offers you and your mates an insight
into Southeast Thailands most beautiful underwater scenery.
The diving in the Koh Tao region (northern part of the
archipelago) is the best anywhere in the Gulf of Siam.
There is enough variation to suit all levels of divers.
From deep sites around towering submerged pinnacles
with various hard and soft coral species to gentle sloping
coral reefs - all these places can be reached within
a 1 or 2 day diving tour organized by EASY DIVERS. Transportation
comes in three different forms, depending on destination
to be reached: Tourboat / Speedboat / Rubber Dhingi.
EASY
DIVERS offers you 10 different divesites
in their Tour program and about 5 sites in the Resort
program (local diving), and all this on a daily schedule.

Sail
Rock This is probably one of the finest sites
in the Gulf of Siam. It is a wall-dive surrounded by
a number of smaller but still impressive pinnacles.
The southeast face has a natural chimney eroded in the
rock from 6m to 18m depth that you can dive through.
At the eastern end of the wall you can often see Great
Barracudas patrolling the depths. Whale Shark are often
spotted here. At least two dives are recommended.
Marine
Park The legally protected group of about
50 isles offer good diving and unspoiled nature in the
most northern part. Hin Nippon and Koh Wao are the spots
to be named. The rocks are dominated by a gradually
sloping reef of healthy coral laminates. Jacks, tuna
and juvenile Yellowtail Barracuda are familiar passers-by.
At least two dives are recommended.
Samran
Pelagics enthusiasts will find this site terrific, as
you encounter school after school of Great Barracuda,
Threadfin Trevally, Big-eyed Jacks and many more. There
are three main pinnacles - the top of tallest is 12m
below surface - plus a mountainous terrain of scattered
rocks large enough to swim around and explore. Two dives
are recommend; it is suitable for supervised and experienced
divers only.
Koh
Tao
The dive spots around the turtle island offer a wide
range of underwater seascapes:
Chumphon
Pinnacles Probaly Tao's most impressive site.
The site consists of four underwater pinnacles; the
highest peaks are 16m below surface. Large schools of
Great Barracuda, tuna, mackarel are frequent visitors.
Whale Sharks, with accompanying Striped Remoras, are
often sighted here during the season's later months.
Green
Rock Divers come here for the tremendous
selection of adventurous swimthroughs provided by large
archways, caverns, caves and crevices which cut through
Green Rock. This is as well a good place for see Green
and Hawksbill Turtles.
Nang
Yuan Following the reef east, you approach
a number of small caves and overhangs; these serve as
shelters for many Blue-spot Rays. Beyond the boulder
corals is a shallow sloping reef formed of table staghorns
and various leaf corals. The side is good for night
dives.
White
Rock A very enjoyable dive, suitable for
both novice and experienced divers. The site consists
of two submerged pinnacles, the higher of which is covered
by only 2m of water.
Red
Rock
Two large rocky outcrops - the larger standing 10m proud
of the water. There are many different species of fish
along the reef: Titan Triggerfish, Blue-ringed Angelfish,
large Parrotfish, fusiliers all abound. Drift dives
are possible here.
Southwest
Pinnacles These three submerged pinnacles represent
a series of short wall-dives. Away from the rock are
many pelagics of all sizes. Between the rocks are many
bushy black corals sea whips and gorgonian Seafans.
